The Deep Geological Repository Project near the Forsmark nuclear power plant in Eastern Sweden involves constructing a large underground facility for the long-term storage of radioactive waste. This critical infrastructure comprises an access tunnel to the first storage level, three vertical shafts serving ventilation and elevator purposes, a central underground area, and main plus transport tunnels. All these components will be situated at depths of up to 500 meters to ensure the secure containment of hazardous nuclear waste.

The project is contracted by the Swedish company SKB (Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB) and awarded to Implenia through an Early Contractor Involvement agreement. This contract covers the full scope from planning and detailed design to construction, and involves a multidisciplinary, multiphase energy infrastructure development with a contract value amounting to several hundred million Swiss francs. Implenia brings decades of experience in large-scale tunnel construction and energy infrastructure, positioning it as a capable partner to deliver this complex underground facility with the highest precision and safety standards.

Planlagt byggestart høst 2025

Construction is scheduled to begin with the planning phase in autumn 2025, followed by detailed design and successive construction stages. The entire project timeline extends through to 2033, underscoring the large scale and technical complexity involved. The phased approach ensures rigorous adherence to engineering and safety requirements throughout the development of the deep repository.
