Fiberglass Roof Deterioration

The Nordic pavilion at the Venice Biennale, designed by Sverre Fehn, has been a significant showcase for Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish art and architecture since 1962. However, over recent years, the aging fibreglass roof failed to let in sufficient daylight, preventing the artworks from being displayed properly.

Roof Replacement by Milan Specialists

To rectify this, specialists from Milan were commissioned by Statsbygg to replace the old fibreglass cloth with a new, transparent material. The new roof allows natural light to illuminate the pavilion once more. The project adhered to the original installation methods and involved close collaboration with the foundation that preserves Sverre Fehn’s architecture.

3 mn NOK Renovation Cost

All necessary infection prevention measures were meticulously observed during the project, which proceeded without any incidents. The total cost of the renovation, approximately 3 million Norwegian kroner, was shared among Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Although the next art biennale has been postponed to 2022 due to the pandemic, the Nordic pavilion will open for the architecture biennale in 2021.
