The Roche Tower 2 foundation and excavation project in Basel, also known as Roche Construction 02, is a collaborative effort between Implenia Switzerland Ltd. and BAUER Schweiz AG, commissioned by Hofmann - La Roche. Initiated in October 2016, the project involved constructing the excavation pit and foundations for the tallest building in Switzerland, standing at 205 metres. Implenia took the lead with a 75% share, overseeing the technical direction of the joint venture.

The excavation pit, with a depth of approximately 20 metres, required an overlapping pile wall with a diameter of 1,200 mm. This wall was constructed from ground level in the southern section, while the other three sides were built from an excavation height of about 10 metres below ground level. Securing the excavation pit involved an anchored retaining wall in the east and anchored underpinning in the north/east. The existing basement of a neighbouring building was utilized for the western section; overall, the project involved significant work including 206 bored piles for the pile wall, 104 bored piles for the foundations, and various retaining and infill tasks.

Logistiske og geologiske utfordringer

The project faced challenges primarily due to complex logistics arising from the limited space around the excavation pit, which lacked an access ramp. This necessitated the use of long-reach excavators on platforms and crane-based concrete pouring. Additionally, the geology of lower terrace deposits with pressing groundwater complicated drilling operations. Despite these hurdles, the project was successfully completed by May 2018.

The project was managed and designed by Gruner AG and omniCon Gesellschaft für innovatives Bauern mbH, with a construction volume valued at 20 million CHF (approximately 20.4 million USD). The successful completion of the excavation and foundation work not only supports the ambitious architectural goals of Roche Tower 2 but also highlights the capabilities and collaboration strengths of the companies involved.
