Implenia has secured an Early Contractor Involvement contract with the Swedish company SKB (Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB) to construct the initial underground section of a deep geological repository for the long-term storage of radioactive waste near the Forsmark nuclear power plant in Eastern Sweden. The contract encompasses the planning, design, and construction phases.

The project involves building an access tunnel to the first storage level, three vertical shafts for ventilation and an elevator, a central underground area, as well as main and transport tunnels, all situated at depths of up to 500 meters. The planning phase is set to begin in autumn 2025, with construction expected to conclude by 2033. The contract scope covers a multidisciplinary, multiphase energy infrastructure project with a volume amounting to several hundred million Swiss francs.
