Renovation in Neuchâtel Center

Aux Armourins is a refurbishment and extension project located in the heart of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Originally consisting of three buildings named 'Armourins', 'Hôpital', and 'Coquillon' from the 1950s, the site was holistically reimagined to address prior demolitions and lack of authenticity. The new development features a commercial building with three floors dedicated to commercial activities, one office floor with an indoor terrace, and eleven residential units.

Challenges in Pedestrian Zone

One of the significant challenges of the project was managing the construction site within Neuchâtel’s pedestrian zone, which required careful planning to minimize inconvenience to local businesses and pedestrians. The demolition process, especially in the historic backdrop of the old town, was handled delicately. A micro-sized supporting wall was utilized to protect surrounding buildings from potential vibration damages during construction.

Sustainability and Transport Links

Sustainability was a key focus for the Aux Armourins project. The building’s central location in the old town offers excellent public and private transport connections. The extension allowed for potential additional floor areas, and the renovated building shell provided improved thermal and noise insulation, reducing the energy required for heating. Private terraces offer high-quality living spaces with views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding area.

Completion and Project Value

The project was completed with a total construction volume valued at 23.5 million CHF. The building owner, SPS Immobilien AG, and the architect firm Maison d’art’chitecture Serge Grard SA, were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition. The revamped Aux Armourins not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also offers added value through its energy-efficient design.
