940m Tunnel with Park

The Einhausung Schwamendingen project involves constructing a 940-metre long, 30-metre wide, and 8 to 10 metre high cut-and-cover tunnel to enclose a section of the N01/40 national road between the Aubrugg motorway junction and the Schöneich Tunnel. Along the tunnel's roof, a new overland park will provide a green meeting space accessible via ramps, stairs, and lifts, aimed at enhancing the local area's quality of life by reconnecting district zones.

Co-funded CHF 60m Investment

This innovative project, co-funded by the Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), the Canton, and the City of Zurich, seeks to mitigate the negative impacts of road noise and exhaust fumes. The design includes 234 concrete beams, each weighing 70 tonnes, and involves significant foundation engineering investment of CHF 60 million. Additionally, the project includes 1 km of microtunnelling.

Traffic, Noise, and Deadlines Managed

Key challenges include managing traffic flow with 2 x 2 lanes, minimizing environmental impacts like noise and waste water, adhering to 23 intermediate deadlines with penalties, and dealing with geological and groundwater conditions. Construction on the existing Schöneich Tunnel is restricted to night hours to avoid new stress on the tram tunnel running beneath the motorway. The project is managed by a joint venture utilizing Building Information Modelling (BIM) and involves billing across 8,500 individual items.

Completion Expected by May 2024

Contracting entities include the Bundesamt für Strassen ASTRA (ASTRA Winterthur) as the building owner and Kanton und Stadt Zürich. The construction and planning are handled by INGEK12 and Locher Ingenieure AG. The project started in September 2018 and is expected to be completed by May 2024, with a construction volume valued at 53,055 M CHF.
