Gemini Wind Park Overview
The Gemini Wind Park, one of the largest offshore wind parks in Europe, is located in the North Sea, 85 km off the coast of the Netherlands. It became operational in 2017 and has a rated capacity of 600 megawatts, generating renewable electricity for 1.5 million people and reducing CO₂ emissions by 1.25 million tons per year. The wind park, built between 2014 and 2017, will provide clean energy for decades, with continuous operations and maintenance being crucial to its optimal performance.
Omexom Maintenance Collaboration
Omexom teams from Germany and the Netherlands are responsible for maintaining both offshore and onshore substations. The German team handles the offshore maintenance, including separators and earthing switches, while the Dutch team takes care of the onshore substation. This collaboration ensures a seamless operation, reliable energy access for a hundred thousand mainland households, and the sharing of expertise within Omexom's network.
Power Transformation Process
The Gemini Wind Park consists of 150 turbines, each generating 690 volts of electricity, which is then transformed to 33 kilovolts within the turbine. The electricity from seven to eight turbines is combined and sent to an Offshore High Voltage Station, where it is converted to 220 kilovolts. An 85-kilometer cable connects this station to the land station, where the electricity is then retransformed to 380 kilovolts and connected to the TenneT high voltage grid for transportation over longer distances.
Effective Team Collaboration
Communication, security, and responsiveness are key elements of the successful collaboration between Omexom's Dutch and German teams. During the annual scheduled works in June, twenty specialists from both countries are active, ensuring smooth operations. The teams have developed a strong working relationship since 2018, marked by effective communication, professional documentation, and shared security awareness. They are already collaborating on a second wind farm in the Netherlands and are looking forward to more joint projects in the future.
