Totalverdi og hovedkontrakter
The Mehrspur Zürich-Winterthur project is a large-scale railway infrastructure initiative commissioned by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), involving the construction of a new double-track line to address capacity bottlenecks on the key rail corridor between Zürich and Winterthur. A joint venture between Implenia and Marti, holding equal shares, won five of the six main contract lots, with Implenia’s share totaling approximately CHF 830 million. The overall project value approaches CHF 1.7 billion, and the construction phase is scheduled to last about ten years starting in 2029.
8,3 km tunnel med TBM
Central to the project is the construction of the 8.3 km Brüttener tunnel, which includes two single-track tunnel tubes approximately ten meters in diameter, running between Dietlikon and Winterthur. The tunnel also features a 1 km turn-off linking to Zürich Airport, facilitating improved connectivity. Most tunnelling will be executed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), with tunnel boring scheduled to begin in August 2029. In addition to tunnelling, the project comprises extensive civil engineering and foundation works.
Oppgradering av jernbanestrekninger
The project also encompasses comprehensive upgrades of key rail sections and stations: the Winterthur section includes refurbishment of Winterthur Töss station, the Neumühle railway bridge, and the Storchen underpass; the Dietlikon section covers station redevelopment, about 3 km of new track, earthworks, embankments, and a 300 m Dietlikon tunnel; while the Wallisellen section consists of the Wallisellen West crossing, new underpasses, platforms, bridges, and approximately 3 km of new railway track. These improvements are designed to increase frequency, flexibility, and overall capacity of rail services along this vital east-west corridor.
Nødvendig oppgradering for fremtiden
This infrastructure upgrade is critical for Switzerland’s rail network, supporting future mobility needs by relieving current bottlenecks and preparing the corridor for increased train frequencies and modern requirements. Implenia’s CEO highlighted the company’s extensive experience in infrastructure construction and the strategic importance of this project, reaffirming their commitment to sustainable, future-ready solutions that benefit society through improved public transport connectivity.
