Fanger 800 000 tonn CO₂
The Padeswood Fullskala Karbonfangstanlegg CCS project is an advanced carbon capture facility currently under development at a cement plant in Padeswood, United Kingdom. It is designed to capture approximately 800,000 tons of CO₂ annually, effectively capturing nearly all carbon emissions from the factory. This scale of capture is significant, being twice the capacity of the existing Brevik CCS plant in Norway. The project aims to enable decarbonized cement production and deliver net-zero emission cement to the European concrete market.
Heidelberg finansiert og leder
Heidelberg Materials is the leading company responsible for this project and has secured financing through an agreement with the British government. This marks Heidelberg Materials’ second industrial-scale facility using its evoZero carbon capture technology for cement production. The experience and knowledge gained from operating the Brevik CCS plant have reduced technical and operational uncertainties, enabling a robust project plan and forming part of a strategic industrial-scale carbon capture commercialization effort. The initiative is a key step towards scaling commercially viable carbon capture solutions within the cement industry.
Byggestart 2024, 500 nye jobber
Construction is set to begin in late 2024, with the facility expected to be operational by 2029. The building phase will generate significant local employment opportunities, creating up to 500 jobs. Once operational, the plant will secure over 200 existing jobs and create about 50 new permanent positions, providing a boost to the local economy and strengthening industrial expertise in the region.
CO₂ lagres under Liverpool Bay
Captured CO₂ will be compressed and transported via an underground pipeline for secure storage beneath the seabed of Liverpool Bay, integrated within the HyNet North West project infrastructure. This process contributes to reducing carbon emissions significantly and aligns with broader climate goals by safely sequestering industrial CO₂ emissions underground.
Skalerer bærekraftig sementproduksjon
The Padeswood carbon capture installation plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable cement production technologies in Europe. By increasing the supply of evoZero cement with net-zero emissions, the project demonstrates how carbon capture technologies can be efficiently scaled and replicated to drive emissions reductions in energy-intensive industries. This will contribute significantly to decarbonizing the cement sector, which is crucial for meeting European climate targets.
