Nytt tomt for diplomatiet
India, now the world's most populous country, required a larger space for its diplomatic mission in French-speaking Switzerland. In 2009, the Indian authorities acquired a vacant plot of land near the World Health Organisation in Geneva. The new site, marked by its steep slope and lush greenery, was chosen to expand their diplomatic facilities, which had outgrown their cramped premises in central Geneva.
Konstruksjonen fullført i 2023
Construction of the Permanent Mission of India began in 2020 and was completed in June 2023. The complex includes a main building and a smaller structure to the right of the entrance, which houses the Indian consulate and connects to the neighboring building. The design incorporates traditional Indian symbolism, such as a karma wheel with 24 segments and a Ganges-inspired waterfall. The site also features areas dedicated to relaxation and yoga.
Byggeteknikk og design
The buildings are constructed using reinforced concrete for the supporting structures, including ceilings, columns, and walls. The main conference hall is supported by two different load-bearing systems to handle vertical forces and spans approximately 16 meters. The entrance area features a cantilever with a maximum span of 5.5 meters. Ventilated façades clad in white composite glass and porcelain material, with louvred modules of varying sizes, give the structure a distinct appearance. Slim glazing on the base provides large openings to the reception areas, while recessed glazing on the floors above brings natural light into the offices. A perforated sheet metal mashrabijeh at the corner of the façade above the entrance adds a decorative relief effect. The top floor includes a recessed area spanned by a canopy that serves as a terrace roof, emphasizing the building's volume boundaries.
Raskt oppført, kulturell betydning
The new mission complex not only addresses the need for larger diplomatic facilities but also brings cultural symbolism to life through its thoughtful architectural details. Prompt completion in just three years enables India to effectively continue its diplomatic efforts in Switzerland from a modern, efficient, and culturally resonant space.
