120m Arched Bridge Construction

The Pont Neuf project in Aarau involves dismantling the existing Kettenbrücke bridge and constructing a new 120-meter-long arched bridge over the Aare River. This modern concrete structure aims to blend seamlessly into the historic old town setting while enhancing the popular riverside spaces. The new bridge is set to become a landmark for the city and canton of Aarau.

Complex Geometry, High Aesthetic Demands

The project is technically demanding due to the complex geometry of the bridge and the high aesthetic requirements for the exposed concrete surfaces. Special civil engineering methods are necessary for construction in flowing water, and demolition work is required at difficult-to-access sites. The concrete work is particularly challenging, involving pigmented special concrete with a 'wildly' offset formwork board structure for a unique appearance.

ARGE Kettenbrücke Consortium Tasks

The ARGE Kettenbrücke consortium, comprising Implenia Schweiz AG, Rothpletz, Lienhard + Cie AG, and Meier + Jäggi AG, has been commissioned for the construction. Their responsibilities include building a temporary auxiliary bridge and the main replacement structure. Despite the challenges, the partners are proud to contribute to Aarau’s new landmark.

24m CHF Project Management

Contractually, the project is under the management of Ingenieurgemeinschaft Pont Neuf, with overall project oversight by the Kanton Aargau, Departement Bau, Verkehr und Umwelt, Abteilung Tiefbau, Aarau. The project's total construction volume is valued at 24 million CHF, and it started in November 2019 with an expected completion date in August 2023.

Road and Transport Enhancements

The project also includes road construction, special foundation work, and enhancements to both road and shipping transport infrastructures. It addresses the city's need for modern infrastructure while being mindful of environmental and aesthetic considerations.
