Schuppis Expansion Details
The Schuppis Industrial Estate Extension project expands the premises of K+D AG in St. Gallen. The extension features a four-level underground parking garage and five above-ground floors, with a total floor space of 55 x 30 meters. This new structure is directly adjacent to the existing Schuppis 8 production building, which has only one basement level and shallow foundations.
Innovative Solutions for Challenges
Several challenges arose during the construction due to the heterogeneous building plot, characterized by soft, loose moraine on top and heavily pre-stressed and cemented moraine underneath, a high groundwater level, and a deep excavation pit measuring 11.5 meters. The limited space for installation and logistics, along with the presence of surrounding buildings, required innovative solutions. Implenia's Foundation Engineering business unit tackled these challenges by utilizing overlapping bored piles installed in a collar formation and constructing the parking garage's substructure up to ground level.
Excavation and Piling Work
Specifically, the project involved the excavation of 21,800 cubic meters for the foundation pit and the installation of 212 bored piles of 1,000 mm in diameter and 23.5 meters in length for the bored pile wall. The foundations comprised 39 bored piles of 1,000/1,200 mm in diameter and lengths between 9-11 meters, along with 22 auxiliary piles of 1,000 mm in diameter and 8 meters in length, reinforced with HEB 400 steel profiles. The top-down construction method was used for the roof, involving 3,500 cubic meters of concrete.
Completion and Participants
The project was successfully completed in December 2015, having commenced in February of the same year. The total construction volume amounted to 4.5 million CHF, with converted values in multiple currencies. Key participants included K+D Immo AG as the building owner and contracting entity, Kellenberger Ingenieur AG for project management, and Borgogno Eggenberger + Partner AG for both project design and construction management.
Infrastructure and Community Impact
This project not only addressed complex engineering challenges but also contributed significantly to the local infrastructure by enhancing the operational capacity of K+D AG while ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding areas.
