The 'STEP AS25 Rüthi SG - Oberriet, system adjustments' project focuses on a 2,100-meter double track extension for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The project includes removing existing embankments, constructing deep foundations with concrete rubble columns, and rebuilding a geogrid-reinforced embankment along with the roadway. Engineering structures within the project perimeter will be renewed, and the Rüthi railroad station will be converted into a crossing station.

Under the leadership of Implenia (holding a 40% share), the project is executed by a consortium. Key tasks include the construction of a complete station at Rüthi SG, ground improvements with vibrating stop columns, a passenger underpass, and various auxiliary structures like a K+R facility, platforms, and railroad engineering buildings. Additional infrastructure such as a double track from Oberriet to Oberriet North, several overpasses, culverts, and bridges will also be developed or replaced.

The services provided cover a range of construction activities, including earthworks, civil engineering, bridge construction, and specific tasks like track construction and hydraulic engineering. Significant technical challenges arise from geological conditions demanding substantial ground improvements, particularly in areas sensitive to settlement. The project includes about 154 km of concrete vibrating columns for ground stabilization ensuring quality through preliminary tests.

The project's execution is set during an 8-month total closure of the section between Rüthi SG and Oberriet from late February to October 2023. The consortium operates under a 'GU+' contract model, responsible for both general contractor duties and execution planning. The total construction volume is estimated at 100 million CHF, with the project's scheduled completion in May 2024. The project boasts contributions from AFRY Schweiz AG for planning and multiple construction service providers.
