Fra 9,200 m² felt til nabolag

Located at the exit of the municipality of Epalinges, the Les Grands Champs project was designed to transform a 9,200 square meter field into a new neighborhood with mixed residential buildings. The initial structures, including a tennis hall and a carpentry workshop, were demolished to make way for the development, taking advantage of proximity to the city center and public transportation.

The new neighborhood includes eleven buildings with a mixture of rental and owner-occupied apartments. Five buildings are allocated for rental apartments and are located uphill close to Bernstrasse, while six buildings for owner-occupied apartments are situated downhill. The architectural design ensures that each resident has a private area open to a surrounding wooded hill, and the levels of the buildings are staggered to provide intersecting views without direct opposites.

Architecturally, the site maintains uniformity with identical building designs featuring clear lines and facades in brown and beige. The northern façades are more visually closed with horizontal ribbon windows, whereas the southern façades are open, featuring large window fronts and extensive balconies. The buildings are designed to offer flexible interior spaces, allowing apartments to range from 6 to 2 rooms without altering the exterior appearance. An underground car park accessible via a southern entrance promotes pedestrian-friendly zones by minimizing above-ground motorized traffic.

The project incorporated landscaping into its architectural plan, enhancing pedestrian connectivity with footpaths that traverse the site from east to west, linking various buildings and levels. This focus on pedestrian zones over vehicle traffic aligns with modern urban planning principles that prioritize communal and environmental benefits. The entire project was completed between June 2011 and June 2013, with architectural input from Architectes al30 architectes Sàrl, Lausanne.
